Method and definitions

Customer churn = starting-cohort customers lost ÷ starting customers × 100. Retention = (starting customers − lost) ÷ starting customers × 100. Ending = start − lost + retained new customers.

Track a consistent starting cohort and period. New customers do not enter the retention denominator. Count only new customers still present at period end. This measures customer or logo churn, not revenue churn or net revenue retention.

Worked example

50 losses from 1,000 starting customers gives 5% churn and 95% cohort retention. With 100 retained new customers, ending count is 1,050.
