Return on SEO cost after delivery costs
Break-even revenue: —
Break-even incremental visits: —
Enter valid assumptions to calculate your return.
This is contribution-based ROI, not net business profit. Forecasts do not model ranking gains, sales-cycle delay, ramp-up or the time to recover investment.
Enter additional organic visits per month versus your baseline. Each scenario uses the same investment, conversion rates and customer value. Keep conservative ≤ base ≤ optimistic.
Expected leads and customers can be fractional. They describe averages, not guaranteed sales. Cohort revenue is the selected customer value multiplied by expected customers; it is not necessarily revenue recognised in that month.
For actual results, enter total investment and won organic revenue from the same reporting period. For a forecast, use a monthly investment and incremental monthly visits once the assumed traffic level is reached.
SEO ROI (%) = ((revenue × gross margin) − SEO cost) ÷ SEO cost × 100
With $40,000 in revenue, a 50% gross margin and $5,000 in SEO costs, revenue after delivery costs is $20,000. Contribution after SEO costs is $15,000, giving a contribution-based SEO ROI of 300%.
Some SEO calculators use revenue minus investment without accounting for delivery costs. This tool includes gross margin to give a clearer view of the contribution left over. It excludes other overhead, taxes and costs outside your inputs.
At 1,000 incremental visits, a 2% visit-to-lead rate and a 20% lead-to-customer rate, the forecast is 20 leads and 4 customers. A $10,000 revenue value per customer gives $40,000 in expected cohort revenue.
Break-even visits = SEO cost ÷ (visit-to-lead rate × lead-to-customer rate × revenue per customer × gross margin)
Rates and margin are decimals in this formula. With the example inputs, break-even revenue is $10,000 and break-even incremental traffic is 250 visits. The traffic threshold is rounded up to a whole visit in the results.
A zero margin means revenue cannot cover SEO investment in this model. A zero conversion rate also prevents a finite traffic break-even point. The calculator displays “Not achievable” for these cases.
Use observed conversion rates where available and test a reasonable range of additional traffic. Brand demand, assisted conversions and long B2B sales cycles can make attribution incomplete. Attributed revenue and incremental revenue answer different questions.
First-contract revenue, recognised revenue and lifetime revenue should not be mixed in one comparison. A monthly acquisition cohort can create revenue over several months or years; this forecast does not calculate cash-flow payback or cumulative return.
Connect the model to your SEO and content marketing plan, to prioritise work that supports your business goals.
Understand the numbers
Use a consistent measurement basis to assess your organic growth investment.
SEO ROI measures return relative to SEO investment. This calculator uses revenue multiplied by gross margin, then subtracts SEO costs and divides by SEO costs. It reports contribution-based return rather than net business profit.
The right target depends on margin, investment, revenue horizon and business goals. A positive result means the revenue after delivery costs exceeds the SEO investment entered. It does not mean every business cost is covered.
Multiply incremental organic visits by the visit-to-lead rate, lead-to-customer rate and revenue per acquired customer. These are assumptions, not a prediction of rankings or guaranteed revenue.
Include SEO agency fees, technical SEO, content production, software and allocated internal labour relevant to the same scope and period. Do not count costs already included in gross margin again as SEO costs.
No. Forecast mode models a monthly acquisition cohort at an assumed traffic level. It does not model the time needed to gain rankings, close sales or recognise revenue, so it cannot calculate cash-flow payback time.
Yes. Calculations and CSV export are free and require no sign-up. Your inputs are processed in your browser; this tool does not store or transmit them. Currency selection changes formatting without converting values.
